Long Branch Fire Department’s 11th Annual Cigar Dinner

Long Branch Fire Department’s 11th Annual Cigar Dinner

For the fifth time, I photographed the Long Branch Fire Department‘s Cigar Dinner. The dinner was held in a huge tent erected in the parking lot of Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant, and it featured a buffet dinner, hand-rolled cigar demonstration, raffles, auctions, and lots of cigar smoking. The evening ended with a fireworks display on the beach.

Closing Ceremony for BRAKING AIDS Ride 2018

Closing Ceremony for BRAKING AIDS Ride 2018

To celebrate the enormous success of BRAKING AIDS Ride, riders and crew triumphantly rode into the closing ceremony in front of Grant’s Tomb. After a few moving speeches, a check was presented to Housing Works for the net proceeds, which will go a long way toward sustaining Housing Works’ mission of offering lifesaving services for low-income men and women living with HIV/AIDS. One highlight the ceremony was a performance by Fogo Azul, an all women Brazilian drum line.

Day 3 on BRAKING AIDS Ride 2018

On the final day of BRAKING AIDS Ride, the riders were exhausted but still full of energy with the end in sight. In addition to the spectacular weather and scenery, a highlight of the day was a military escort through the Westpoint Academy campus.

Day 2 on BRAKING AIDS Ride 2018

Day 2 on BRAKING AIDS Ride started with a moment of silence on the steps of the New York State capitol building before the 100-mile ride to Ellenville. You’ll notice riders and crew wearing red dresses in these photos, because it’s “Red Dress Day.” The tradition started on AIDS LifeCycle, the seven-day AIDS ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It was someone’s idea that everyone should “dress red” for a day so that on a portion of the route that looped back on itself there would appear to be a giant red AIDS ribbon if viewed from above. Somehow “dress red” got reversed to “red dress” and has remained that way ever since. BRAKING AIDS Ride picked up the tradition in 2010.

Day 1 on BRAKING AIDS Ride 2018

For the tenth year I volunteered to photograph BRAKING AIDS Ride, the three-day, 300-mile AIDS ride with a new route from Cooperstown to New York City to benefit Housing Works‘s lifesaving services for low-income men and women living with HIV/AIDS. I followed about 100 riders and volunteer crew members the entire way, shooting both from the ground and from a moving car (I wasn’t driving!). Day 1 took us from Cooperstown to Albany.
