In 2011 I made the author photo above for a writer of children’s math books. Rather than using the same photo with his biography on the back cover of every book he writes, he likes to shoot a new one each time that is relevant to the subject of the book. The topic of his forthcoming book is patterns, and the simple idea was to photograph him in a shirt of one pattern against a background of another. It was a fun shoot. We started by selecting one shirt from a few he brought to my studio. Next we went to a nearby fabric store that overwhelmed us with choices for a background.
In a bright corner of the store, we were able to unroll a yard of a few selected fabrics, and with a quick smart phone photo determine on the spot if we liked a pattern. We returned to the studio with two yards of our favorite fabric and proceeded to shoot the portrait.
