A couple I know from the pro bono work I do with BRAKING AIDS® Ride and Walk to Action asked me to photograph their wedding at the Marriage Bureau in New York City. I admire the statement they made, since their marriage in New York affords them no rights in their home state of Texas. They planned to follow the rules and get their marriage license on Thursday, then return on Friday for the ceremony. But I wasn’t available on Friday, so they decided to apply for a judicial waiver. They still had to get the license first, and it took so long that it was too late for the waiver; they’d have to return the next day. We made photos at City Hall anyway before walking through Chinatown and Greenwich Village to end at the historic Stonewall Inn to meet other friends. So it was more like an engagement shoot with the couple dressed in suits.
