Last weekend, friends with a home on Deal Lake in Wanamassa, NJ, had a party during which we watched the Jersey Shore Rowing Association 20th Annual Deal Lake Jungle Row. The rowers passed the house four times in their laps up and down the lake. I came armed with my tripod and 70-200 mm lens, which was perfect for capturing the action. For many of the shots, I set the camera on continuous shooting mode and fired away while panning. This yielded some great results, but there’s a lot of work afterward to edit the multitude of photos down to the best ones.
The race started a 6:00 p.m. It was cool enough for the race to be pleasant for the rowers, and the light was perfect for the photos. No harsh shadows and nice reflections on the water. By the way, the rumor is true that the rowers apply Crisco (or some other lubricant) to their bare bottoms to help them slide forward and back on the seats!
